How to clean and care for your pickleball paddle
The importance of maintaining your pickleball paddle cannot be underestimated. As the primary piece of equipment used to play this popular sport, your paddle requires regular cleaning and care to ensure optimal performance and longevity.
Check out EPYK's top tips for cleaning your pickleball paddle and steps you can take to extend its lifespan.
How to Clean Your Pickleball Paddle
To improve your ball control and generate spin, most paddles feature a textured hitting surface. However, over time, the texture of the paddle face tends to accumulate dirt from the ball, which can affect your game.
Cleaning the hitting surface
Fortunately, cleaning the hitting surface of most paddles is a simple task that only requires two household items: water and a lint-free cloth. It's crucial to avoid using household cleaners, as they leave a sticky residue on the paddle face. Simply dampen a cloth and gently wipe to remove any dirt or residue along the paddle face and edge guard. Please note that the graphics on your paddle face may wear naturally due to contact with the pickleball ball. This is normal and not related to your cleaning routine.
Cleaning raw carbon fiber blades
Raw carbon fiber paddles are gaining popularity, and because their faces are rougher, they tend to accumulate pickleball debris more quickly. To effectively clean the surface of a raw carbon fiber paddle, use a carbon fiber cleaning block. Simply rub the block over the surface of your paddle in a circular motion, and it will quickly remove any dirt or debris, leaving your paddle looking like new.
Cleaning the paddle grip
During play, your paddle's handle can accumulate dirt due to sweat and exposure to the elements. To prolong the life of your grip, it's essential to wipe the handle with a damp towel or cloth after each playing session. Once clean, be sure to dry it with a separate cloth.
At some point, you'll probably want to replace your grip, which is a simple process you can do at home.
How to care for your pickleball paddle
Even with a regular cleaning routine, there are additional steps you can take to extend the life of your pickleball paddle.
Avoid extreme temperatures
Pickleball paddles, like most sports equipment, are sensitive to extreme temperatures. Cold air can increase their brittleness, making them more prone to breaking. Excessive heat can soften the paddle face and cause delamination. It's best to bring your paddle indoors or out of the garage and store it in a dry closet at room temperature.
Avoid wetting the shovel
Although a little rain won't damage your paddle, submerging it in water or other liquids should be avoided. Many paddles have a honeycomb core that can trap water inside the paddle face, making it difficult to use.
Play carefully
Pickleball paddles are designed to withstand the repeated impact of hitting the ball. However, they aren't meant to be slammed hard against the ground, whether out of frustration or after losing a close match.
Be careful with the edge protector, as wear in this area indicates frequent contact with the ground. Consider adding protective tape to the edge of your rimless paddles to help keep the ends safe from scratches and dents.
When not in use, store your paddle in a secure location to prevent accidental damage, such as being stepped on or getting caught under something heavy. Consider using a paddle cover for additional protection against scratches.
How long should a pickleball paddle last?
The lifespan of a pickleball paddle typically ranges from one to five years, depending on use and the level of care it receives. Although EPYK offers a warranty against manufacturing defects, natural wear and tear is normal.
By following proper cleaning and maintenance practices, you can significantly improve your performance on the court and extend the life of your paddle.
